On June 17, the Methodological Council of Joniškis “Saulė” Basic School organised a professional learning day for teachers in Vilnius on the theme “The Harmony Between Emotional Well-being and Academic Achievement.” The experience provided valuable insights that complement the school’s ongoing work within the ACCESS project, which focuses on strengthening inclusive education and supporting the diverse learning needs of primary school students.
During the visit to Šiaurės Lyceum, the teachers met with Mantas Cegelskas, Head of Education, and members of the teaching staff. The discussion focused on the relationship between students’ emotional well-being, engagement, and academic achievement. The teachers explored innovative educational approaches and practical strategies for creating a safe, motivating, and supportive learning environment.
These ideas are particularly relevant to inclusive education. Every child has different abilities, strengths, emotional needs, and ways of learning. Creating an environment where all learners feel safe, valued, and supported is essential for their participation and progress. The discussions encouraged teachers to reflect on how everyday classroom practices can better respond to individual needs – an important principle of the ACCESS project.
The methodological day also included a visit to the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, where teachers learned more about the country’s democratic system and discussed how civic education can be meaningfully integrated into teaching. They also met with V. Aleknavičienė, Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, and discussed opportunities for connecting culture and education.
The day encouraged teachers to share good practices, reflect on their teaching, and explore new ways of supporting every learner. It was a valuable opportunity for professional growth and further strengthened the school’s commitment to inclusive, supportive, and learner-centred education – values that are at the heart of the ACCESS project.
